Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
